You might think that you are getting a bargain with part-worn tyres, as they are certainly cheaper than budget ranges. But does saving money come at a price in terms of safety? And is spending your money on these tyres actually false economy? In this article from K&M Tyres, your local tyre fitters based in Crowborough in East Sussex, we examine part-worn tyres in more detail including what they are, the UK law on these tyres, the risks involved, and whether there actually are any pros to buying part-worn tyres.
What are part-worn tyres?
They are second hand tyres, tyres that have already been used that have been removed from vehicles and resold. Some tyres come from Germany where tyres are normally changed when they reach 3mm of tread. In the UK, the minimum depth of tread is 1.6mm and so these tyres are exported to the UK where their lifespan can be extended. However, many outlets selling part-worn tyres don’t know where the tyres come from. It’s also important to note that some are taken from vehicles that have been written off in accidents.
The risks attached with buying part-worn tyres
Grip starts to deteriorate on tyres at 3mm and with only 1.4mm of tread available before they become illegal, it means another change of tyres won’t be too long in coming.
- Limited lifespan
- Difficult to match the tread of existing tyres
- Reduced efficiency
- Less grip, so can be dangerous in wet conditions
- Detrimental to braking
- More road noise
- No guarantees
UK law on part-worn tyres
It is legal for these tyres to be sold. However, the tyres will have to conform to rules laid out in The Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994, part of the Consumer Protection Act. This was introduced to stop the sale of substandard tyres, which could contribute to accidents on the roads.
- Have an original tread pattern that’s 2mm deep
- There must be no lumps or bulges internally or externally
- An inflation test has to be passed
- Tread must be a minimum of 2mm across the width of the tyre and around the circumference
- The original grooves must be visible
- Marked as PART-WORN in letters that are at least 4mm high with an ‘E’ if they are retreads
Why would you buy a part-worn tyre?
The only reason on the surface is to save money. However, with a brand new tyre there is 8mm of tread and with part-worn tyres normally around 2-3mm. Surveys carried out suggest that NEW budget tyres are more economical in the long run and certainly much safer for you and your family
A risky option, so be careful when buying part-worn tyres
K&M Tyres does not recommend the buying of part-worn tyres, as if you are involved in an accident that is due to the fitting of part-worn tyres, you would have no legal comeback if you seek compensation. However, if you do decide to take this option, we advise buying a recognised brand, always in pairs from a reputable trader and to make sure you have checked for any damage such as bulges, splits or lumps.
