About TyreSafe
TyreSafe was set up in 2006 with the aim of reducing the number of tyre-related incidents on the roads in the UK. The UK charity goes about this by bringing the importance of tyre maintenance to the attention of drivers of vehicles. It also makes them aware of the dangers of defective and illegal tyres. Many areas of the industry offer support to TyreSafe including most major tyre manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers. Some equipment suppliers and vehicle manufacturers also support TyreSafe.
TyreSafe Tyre Safety Month Campaign – 2020
This year’s Tyre Safety Month campaign covers all 3 key areas involved in the routine maintenance of car tyres, These are Air pressure, Condition and Tread depth referred to as ACT. It recommends checking tyres every month to ensure that they are at the right pressure. This information can be found in the vehicle handbook, the petrol filler cap, car sticker on the inner door or on the actual tyres. The condition of the tyres should also be checked for stones, loose objects, lumps, bumps or bulges. TyreSafe recommends that professionals check your tyres. This is particularly important if you are not sure about the condition of your tyres. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm otherwise your tyres are illegal. Failure to comply could lead to a fine of £2,500 and 3 penalty points on your licence.
Why is tyre safety important?
Your tyres are essential for safe driving. They are the link between your vehicle and the surface you are travelling along. Tyres that are not at the correct pressure, have insufficient tread and are in poor condition can jeopardise the handling of your vehicle, reduce grip and decrease braking performance.
- Provide grip for braking and acceleration
- Maintain steering and directional control
- Act as shock absorbers
- Provide a safe and comfortable ride
