You may have discovered that with the recent incredibly high temperatures, the air conditioning in your vehicle didn’t work at all or wasn’t as effective as it could be. An air conditioning system is a feature with which most cars are now fitted and it does require regular maintenance. However, routine servicing is something that can be easily overlooked. If your air conditioning system does stop working, it can usually be resolved quite quickly and simply with regassing. It’s also worth noting that car air con isn’t just great for cooling the car down in summer; it also helps to demist windows in winter. In this article from K&M Tyres, we look at the science behind an air conditioning system, signs your system isn’t working as effectively as it should, how often your vehicle needs regassing and why it’s important to keep it in tip top condition.

How does the air conditioning system work?

There are five parts involved with the refrigerant, (the gas) contained in the compressor. When you activate the system, the gas travels to the condenser. This causes a drop in temperature to the gas, which then becomes a liquid. It’s now time for the liquid to pass through a receiver, which removes impurities before the liquid reaches the thermal expansion valve. The valve adjusts the flow of the liquid so that you can control the temperature. Finally, the liquid is turned into a vapour as it passes through the evaporation coils, which then gets blown into your car as cool air. The refrigerant is now a gas and returns to the compressor and the process starts all over again. Simple really! But that’s probably enough of that!

Signs your air conditioning system isn’t working as effectively as it should
  • Air from the vents is not as cool as it used to be
  • An odour is coming from the system – similar to mildew
  • Rattling noise – condenser could be worn
  • A weak flow of air or no air coming out
  • Condensation building up particularly from the dashboard
  • You can’t remember when it was last serviced
What is regassing?

The old refrigerant from your air conditioning system is simply replaced with a new refrigerant. This is a process that you will want a specialist to do as they may find that the reason your system has failed is because there is a leak.

What happens if the air conditioning system isn’t regassed?
  • It gradually becomes less efficient – car is uncomfortable in hot weather
  • Windows may take longer to demist in the winter
  • Pipes may crack and parts seize up
  • Engine works harder using more fuel
