What is the difference between mineral oil and synthetic oil? It’s a question we are often asked since oil is the most important fluid in a motor engine. It has the job of lubricating engine components and reducing friction. There are basically two types of oil available, namely mineral oil and synthetic oil. It’s important that you use the correct oil in order to keep your vehicle running smoothly and delivering peak performance. In this article we look at both types of oil in more detail and also throw a third type, semi-synthetic oil into the mix.
Mineral oil
This is directly derived from refined crude petroleum oil with any unwanted hydrocarbons and natural contaminants removed during the process. In general, mineral oil is used for older vehicles that use older technologies. Mineral oil should be used if your vehicle manufacturer recommends its use.

Synthetic oil
Synthetic oil is a base oil made artificially through a chemical process designed with a more optimal molecular structure. Today mineral oil is widely used for the superior protection it offers and as such, many newer vehicle engines use synthetic oil.

Semi-synthetic oil
As you might expect, this is a mixture of mineral oil and synthetic oil. In terms of price, this is more expensive than mineral oil, but cheaper than synthetic oil. When semi-synthetic oil is compared to synthetic oil, it offers the same protection features although is less powerful, but more economical. The oil is thinner and more durable than mineral oil and is suitable for modern engines. It is a good choice as an economical alternative.
Performance over cost with engine oil
When considering which oil to choose, you will have to adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions. Synthetic oil is more expensive but longer performing and is suited to driving at higher speeds and long-distance driving. Mineral oil is good for driving in towns and cities and at a fixed speed over shorter distances.
